Born in South Africa, Brian's craft has been passed down through three generations of McHardys. His great-grandfather, William McHardy, was the general manager of the Premier Diamond Mining Company in South Africa when the Cullinan Diamond was found in 1905. The Cullinan Diamond is the largest gem quality diamond found to date. His grandfather, Donald McHardy, went on to take over the general manager position of the Premier Diamond Mining Company when William passed away in 1913. His father, James McHardy, used his knowledge of diamonds to become a diamond classifier. Brian's exposure to the diamond industry is what led him on the path to becoming a Master Diamond Cutter.
Brian, who joined Hearts On Fire at its inception in 1996, is their lead trainer and Master Diamond Cutter. Alongside Hearts On Fire, Brian has helped revolutionize the standards to which diamonds are cut today.
